2022 Pentathlon

Just a heads-up that the 2022 Pentathlon kicks off in a little over 24 hours. I expect that there will be moments where projects become unresponsive due to the large loads from prepping or releasing bunkers, and you may want to extend your work caches. This might be a bit more acute than past years as we have a smaller number of active projects with reliable work. Hopefully WCG comes back on line on Monday to relieve some of the pressure, but I'm not counting on it as we've had radio silence since the deployment extension on 4/21.

The only announced pentathlon discipline thus far is the competition-long one. It is at Universe@Home and folks are definitely loading up. The website says there are 2.5 million tasks ready to download and all statuses are green, but the server can't hand them out fast enough--I keep getting "Project has no tasks available" messages.

Should be fun to follow along with SG's usual hourly updates: https://www.seti-germany.de/boinc_pentathlon/.

I joined and got one task. I need 19 more, but no more work is available.

EDIT: Two minutes later and my queue is full!

I didn't think about it being the time of year for this and never saw any notice about it until now. Maybe next year...

Sorry for the confusion my post caused--I didn't mean to imply that we were signed up (or should be). I was just giving a warning in case anyone wanted to avoid the congestion that will likely occur at the 5 competition projects.

As we've discussed in the past here, the pentathlon takes a level of team commitment that we frankly haven't been up to. We can't really be competitive with the big teams when only those handful of us on the message boards actively participate. With 5 projects of differing lengths, we can't simply rely on our strong base of crunchers who aren't engaged on these boards to pull us through. We had been stuck in basically the same position (13th and 14th) for the two years we competed before deciding to step away.

P.S. The second and third projects are now announced: NumberFields@Home and PrimeGrid.

I'll participate in next year's challenge as I should be in my new place with new equipment. Going against the tide and moving north out of hurricane country. Construction is scheduled to start new week and should be complete around December which should give me plenty of time to get setup.

Seems Universe is struggling this morning. This is a small reason why it is hard to get excited about challenges. Not that many robust projects out there. It's also hard to reconcile the constant demand for new crunchers but they don't have the resources to support those crunchers should they materialize. Universe (among others) is an example of be careful what you ask for...
