Ugh, that's crazy. Sometimes I feel like all this technology is just creating more headaches, especially with cars. I can tell I'm turning into the proverbial grumpy old man.

My latest Linux trial has been Pop!_OS. It is easy to install and BOINC is available in the Pop!_Store. Installation of BOINC was a breeze. I am using an Nvidia GPU and this is where Pop!_OS excelled. Although it was listed, it would not let me upgrade to the 535 drivers. I had to install the 515 drivers first, and then the latest drivers were listed for installation. If I had known this requirement, my Linux Mint 21.1 and ElementaryOS installations would have updated without borking the installations.

Installation of the Folding@home client and the viewer on Pop!_OS were easy using Eddy (the installer). However, FAH Control could not be installed (child process code 100 error). I may sort that problem another day. I understand that there is a Python3 version of the FAH Control somewhere.

I tried V8 Beta. I could open the browser, it recognized my name, team, etc. but would not run. I am on Windows at this time. The log showed an Exception that prevented downloading.

Jason, I switched to Pop!_OS. Here is the V8 beta work log:

I discovered Pop! a few years ago and it's my go-to for Linux now. (y) If I felt like spending that much money I'd buy one of their systems and be done with it.

Asteroids@home is a nice project that runs without tweaking on CPUs and Nvidia GPUs. One task per GPU is enough. CPU and GPU temperatures run cooler than other projects such as Folding@home which loads GPUs and CPUs the heaviest in my experience. I can't get excited about tracking asteroids the way I can with searches for cures for diseases. World Community Grid (WCG) is beyond hope at this time and that is a shame because I like their projects. WCG has not had a steady supply of GPU tasks at any time. I do not plan to run WCG again. GPUGrid has a steady workflow, but the tasks are really long! Until the "next new thing" comes along, I plan to run Folding@home until I get bored out of my mind.

Thanks, Jason.

The Dell RTX 3080 arrived today. Fortunately, this video card by MSI is not the Lite Hash Rate (LHR) type. I put it in my computer running a 1000 Watt power supply and it sounded as if it was working hard. I checked my power usage on the PowerChute and saw that the system was running at 950 watts. I swapped the power supply for a 1250 and later added the 1000. The RTX 3080 added about 360 watts to the system when Folding@home. I am not overclocking the GPUs but I have reduced the memory speeds by ~500MHz to reduce temperatures to 710-75C with the fan speeds at 85%. There is a box fan running in the hallway to put more cool air in this room. It is 70F outside. Summer should be interesting with the computer using almost $50 of electricity directly each month and adding heat during the cooling season.

This computer runs in a mining rig rack, so adding the second power supply was a snap. If GPU cooling becomes an issue, I can use PCIe x1 risers and physically separate the two video cards, Titan X (Pascal) and RTX 3080.

Added: I put the Titan X on a riser to separate the two video cards and it no longer sounds as if it is a hovercraft. The RTX 3080 runs at 67 with the fans set on Auto (fans are running at 70%). The Titan X is running at +200MHz, 70C with fan speed of 80% on the 1x riser, the same as when I had only one video card.

Another edit: I use MSI Afterburner to monitor and control my video cards. With the current physical arrangement, the fans are set on Auto. The Titan is running 73C and the 3080 is running 65C. Full load while folding@home. The hovercraft is in the distance with fans at 68% (3080) and 73% (Titan). I can live with this, and the power load is about 910 watts total with two power supplies in use.

If you have Facebook, here is a photo.

With the V8 client did they add something similar to BOINC's exclusive applications feature?

Project settings include a box to check if one wants to run Beta projects. There is a dropdown selection for running Any, Alzheimer's, Cancer, Huntington's, Parkinson's, Influenza, Diabetes, or Covid. There is not a "Priority" choice.

Users can select resources, e.g. to crunch only when idle by checkbox, to utilize any whole number of CPU threads on a slider and the listed video cards (GPUs) by a checkbox. I selected all 20 threads and it crunches a task on 18 threads because two threads are allocated to the two GPUs.

I gave up on version 8. I could not restart my computer without dumping work or losing the configuration and not running the GPUs after restarting. It is still Beta and I have not seen any improvements regarding save points or intervals for saving work.
