It looks like they've added the ability to skip VirtualBox work, but it's in an unusual way. You need to go to your Hosts page. You can find the link on your account page when you log in, "Computers on this account". From there select the computer(s) you want to avoid VirtualBox work by clicking Details, and click Skip.

I haven't tried this yet to see how well it works. I had to stop running Rosetta months ago because VB work was failing and there was no way to avoid it. From what I've heard most of the work now is VB, so it may not be worth running if you can't or don't want to run VB work.

I updated the kernel on several of my machines and now VirtualBox won't install cleanly and is not recognized by the BOINC client. I see there is a new VB update so I may try again to see if it has been fixed. Supposedly the .27 version fixed the symbols problem but it didn't work for me. Now the .30 version is out so I will try that.

I had VB problems on the "new" machine. I didn't notice any problems with the installation and it looks like BOINC detects it:
11/29/2021 11:59:55 PM VirtualBox version: 6.1.26_Popr145957
But tasks fail. I've seen comments that some VB version 5.x.x is the one you need but I don't feel like chasing that down.

I tried installing the .30 version from the Oracle repository but that didn't work due to a major mismatch between their version and the OS (Ubuntu 21.10). Went back to the version in the Ubuntu repositories and that worked with 21.10 and is detected by the client. Now I have to move the battle to CentOS Stream 8 which is a little more involved. I agree, I wouldn't back level to version 5. 6 has been out quite awhile now.
