When being in the top ten at Milkyway was not enough..

I found a new MSI Radeon HD 7990 for $189.99 on eBay and it will be here next week. Sadly, the two additional PCIe 6+2 cables for the OCZ ZX power supply won't be here until 3 December. This will be the fourth dual-GPU HD 7990 on my mining rig.

I may not run this rig in the hottest weather due to the load on the air conditioning system. It is already heating the house on 55 degree days.

A local network problem dented my output, plus tinkering with the cache settings. I'll be back to 100% soon.

Mine locked-up about twelve hours ago while running 7 work units per GPU and being overclocked. I lost about 30 minutes of crunching before I discovered it. I backed off on the overclock and changed to 5 wus per GPU. I will go back to 7 or 8 wus later in my search for maximum output.

Yesterday, I learned that AMD Firepro S9100 cards are cheap and FP64 processing is 2.11 GFLOPS per card. There are 200 new ones available on eBay with bids starting at $91 and a different seller has one listed for $129. The Firepro FP64 rate is 1/2 of the FP32 rate whereas my HD 7990s are FP64 = FP32 divided by 4 instead of 2. They are also silent since they are passively cooled.

From the link above, "Being a dual-slot card, the AMD FirePro S9100 draws power from 1x 6-pin + 1x 8-pin power connectors, with power draw rated at 225 W maximum. This device has no display connectivity, as it is not designed to have monitors connected to it. FirePro S9100 is connected to the rest of the system using a PCI-Express 3.0 x16 interface. The card measures 267 mm in length, and features a dual-slot cooling solution.|

Live and learn.

There are a few of those in service on MW, not sure how many. Regarding the cooling, I expect they were intended to be in a server chassis and get the cooling from the system fans in that. I wouldn't try running them without any fans at all, which means something would have to be rigged up.

At Milkyway, our RAC is over 6,000,000 which puts us solidly in 6th place among teams.

I will add another 600,000 to our RAC when my two new 6+2 PCIe cables arrive. I am already running the "fourth" HD 7990, and plan reapply thermal compound and put a new fan assembly on the removed HD 7990. One of the GPUs on the removed card was running about 82 C (102 C is the limit) while all others were running 72-75 C. I'd really like to have two replacement heatsinks for the card but have not found any on eBay yet.

When looking for my two PCIe cables, I learned that the cables are not interchangeable between various brands although they appear to be the same. Different manufacturers use different pins (pin-outs) at the power supply for ground and powered pins. Reference at GamersNexus.

How slow can eBay's SpeedPAK delivery service be? My two new video card cables got to New Jersey last Wednesday and are promised by Thursday, 12 December. I need them right now because ultraZ is about to exceed my RAC. Way to go, team! We are solidly ranked 6th in team standings.

I am currently running three work units per GPU and have not determined the optimal number to run yet.

I am running the AMD blockchain drivers again after having lockups with the latest Radeon drivers.

I found this to be the case even on PSUs from the same manufacturer, EVGA in my case. I burnt up a pump trying to use a 4-pin Molex cable from one PSU on another one. Luckily it wasn't an expensive pump and it was just on the test bench.

I've found the time to be around 3 weeks, usually. It might be slower this time of year with increased volume from the holiday. ultraZ recently deployed a VII so his RAC will probably be going up for a little while. I saw an open-box VII deal at Micro Center, under $600 that I'm really tempted to get even though I don't have a system to put it in.

I'm running 19.6.3 and haven't had any real problems. I have a very small number of invalids, and have had a couple tasks that hung up and ran for many hours, so obviously weren't actually running on the GPU at all. I usually have over 14k valid tasks and 1000+ pending on the server at any one time, so such a small failure rate doesn't bother me. If you think it's a driver problem I would try to go back to the oldest driver you can find. Those GPUs were out long before the mining craze etc. and might do better with older drivers.

My motherboard can handle another 15, 19 total, video cards, but my two power supplies are maxed out (2250 watts total). I figured that ultraZ had dropped other GPU projects. He will pass me with a Radeon VII added, and I am glad he brought more firepower. Go USA!

Edit: I just checked my Kill-A-Watt meter and I could probably add a Radeon VII. (Do I hear jingle bells?)
Second edit: Here's a new XFX Radeon VII for $500. (SOLD)

The fourth HD 7990 is crunching. The four HD 7990s show as eight HD 7990 series in the stats.
We aren't likely to move up in the team RAC rank, but we are gaining ground in the total overall. We will overtake Overclockers UK by end of day today, and should overtake Team 2ch in a couple weeks or so! :USA:
